The Detours are an Atlanta-based, twangy, rootsy-rock band not entirely unlike Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Sting, XTC, Buddy & Julie Miller, Billy Bragg, The Byrds, Mark Knopfler...you get the idea. The act started in 2004 as a two-man, coffeehouse show when singer/songwriter/guitarists Billy Gewin and Laura Tyler got together after their previous band situations melted down. Both wanted to be a part of a low-maintenance act that involved as little interpersonal politicing as possible, with no particular goal other than to "have fun playing cool songs". The duo worked up just enough material to play their first show and immediately followed up with a number of two-hour gigs composed of both covers and originals for almost a year, swapping out weaker songs with new ones and honing their vocal blend a little with each new show. This spring, drummer Melissa Massey joined the group and the threesome continued to do coffeehouses and began taking on louder gigs as well. The trio has since grown into a full-band act with the addition of guitarist Dennis Jones. The Detours plan to keep playing shows of all volumes but are focusing on nailing down their new, full-band configuration with Billy on bass and Laura adding keyboard duties to her role as acoustic guitarist.
